Between childhood and beginning independence – clothes for our 9-10 year old girls and boys
There is something special about the age of 9 to 10.
It is a time full of small changes. Where the child still plays freely, but also begins to feel himself in a new way. Who am I? What do I like? And perhaps: What do I want to wear today?
For both girls and boys, wardrobe begins to take on a new meaning in these years. It is no longer just about what feels nice – but also about what feels right. Clothes become a way of showing something about themselves. A kind of voice, without words.
Clothing that keeps up with you – in motion and in development
Children aged 9-10 are not only growing in height, but also in direction. They develop their own preferences, start to choose what to wear and what not to wear – and need clothes that can keep up with it all.
Girls may begin to explore new shapes and colors – and appreciate clothes that feel both pretty and practical. Perhaps a dress that can both twirl and fall softly when you sit and draw.
Boys often want something that doesn't require too much – something they can put on without help and forget they're wearing it because it just feels right. Clothes that can last through the schoolyard, bike rides and all the little adventures.
Clothes shouldn't get in the way of anything. On the contrary – they should invite you to everything.
When the choices become their own
For many parents, dressing suddenly becomes a shared project. Children have their own desires and are beginning to express them clearly. It's a natural part of growing up – and an opportunity to get to know each other better.
A 10-year-old girl may have strong opinions about colors, cuts, and details—and still reach for the softest sweater in the closet. A 9-year-old boy may choose the same sweatshirt day after day because it's the one he feels most comfortable in.
And then there are styles like our Molly in the characteristic red checkered fabric – for some children it quickly becomes a favorite because it has edge and character, but is still easy to move in. A choice that says something – without the child necessarily having to say it themselves.
The important thing is not what they choose – but that they are allowed to feel what feels right.
Inspiration from children's own favorites
Here are three small snapshots from the wardrobe – inspired by what many girls and boys aged 9-10 reach for again and again:
The dress that spins – and can be worn all day long
Many girls love the feeling of a dress that moves with them. One that they can feel great in – but is still comfortable for a full day of school, play and relaxation. A long-sleeved dress in soft cotton can be styled with leggings and sneakers, and with tights and a hair band when the day calls for a little extra.
Pants that can do everything kids can do
Whether it's a girl or a boy, most children at this age want to be able to move freely. Pants with an elastic waistband are a favorite - because they are easy to put on and because you can crawl, run, climb and dance without having to worry about anything being tight. Combine with a T-shirt, shirt or knit, depending on the mood of the day.
Knitwear and wool – the soft layers that stay put
When it gets cold, it's often the same sweaters that children choose over and over again. A warm knit or wool sweater that doesn't itch , but just keeps them warm. It can be worn over a dress, with pants or as an extra layer in your bag. The kind of clothing that both girls and boys quickly make their own.
When size is not just a number
It can be difficult to know which size is best. Children grow differently – and develop at their own pace.
As a rule, sizes 134-140 often correspond to children aged 9-10. But the most important thing is not the age – it is the fit. We always recommend measuring and choosing based on what the child feels comfortable in. Clothing should not restrict – it should follow.
A universe with room for everything
Ultimately, it's not about being perfectly dressed. It's about being well dressed for what matters. For everyday life. For the little moments. For the big leaps.
At Flöss we want to create clothes that give space – for movement , for expression, for play, peace and change. Clothes that feel good for both boys and girls – and that become part of their own little stories.
We look forward to accompanying you and your children – in this special time when everything changes a little bit, but childhood is still at hand.
